The Brief
Transform the existing Heritage semi-detached house, into a contemporary living space while maintaining the Heritage value and architectural characteristics of the house.
The Concept
The long, dark entrance passage was transformed into a feature stairwell leading to a new loft within the existing roof space, while previously closed-off rooms were opened up to create a spacious living area.
With a tightly constrained budget, restoring the home’s existing architectural features was essential, while new contemporary elements were introduced in contrast. The courtyard was maximized with stairs leading to a viewing deck overlooking Table Mountain, and the exterior design was kept in keeping with the original house.
In 2017, a second addition was made to the house. This time, we designed a contrasting exterior at the rear, away from the street. Victorian corrugated sheeting and wall cladding were used to connect the old and new seamlessly.
and the new seamlessly.
