The brief was to design a new family home on an open plot in Avignon Estate, Hout Bay. The house had to accommodate 3 bedrooms, living rooms with an outdoor entertainment area, and a home office.
With an estate living and open boundary walling, the house had to maximize privacy, mountain views and outdoor space.
Avignon Estate is governed by strict traditional architectural guidelines, therefore the architectural style was pre-determined. The design was therefore focused on simple lines and layout to accommodate the brief. Private outdoor space was achieved by introducing a courtyard space that was separated from the road by the garage and home office building. An indoor/outdoor living space was created by opening spaces to the courtyard, and a large covered patio was introduced to connect the home office with the house. Mountain views were also a key to the arrangement of spaces. Bedrooms with balconies were designed to be on the first floor facing the court and views.
